Books for this course

The required text book " Head First Design Patterns" by Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Freeman, ISBN 978-0-596-00712-6, looks like it will be really interesting. It has been designed in a way to help you be involved with and learn the material. Here's a quote that goes along with Chapter 1

"Remember, knowing concepts like abstraction, inheritance, and polymorphism do not make you a good object oriented designer. A design guru thinks about how to create flexible designs that are maintainable and that can cope with change"
Each chapter contains activities and puzzles for you to complete with paper and pencil. We will try to do them all and discuss them in class.
When Karen Anewalt last taught this class she also required two other books. One was a Java book, but since many of you have been through CPSC 220 with Java you may not need a book like that. If you have the book you used in CPSC 220 you may find that useful. The Library and I have several good books about Java that you can borrow for the semester. She also required
- UML Distilled, 3rd edition by Martin Fowler ISBN: 0-321-19368-7
That book is also required for CPSC 430. You can buy it now if you'd like since you'll be needing it for CPSC 430, and it's a good book to have in your professional library. We'll be using the resources on the Web to get information about UML so you don't have to buy the book yet.

Assignments:

For Wednesday - Answer the items in Questions1 online.
- Click on the link, Questions1, complete the answers for each item, and click submit.
Read review notes for Java Use the classes Greeter and GreeterTester to produce software that will execute. Produce the JavaDoc documentation for it as well. Send me links to software and the documentation.
Read Chapter 1 of the required text, do the exercises and activities and bring your answers in on Wednesday. You won't have to turn the answers in but I'll be expecting you, if called on, to put your answers on the board and/or discuss the answers by you or others.
